The International Museum of Surgical Science, through its collection of artifacts, paintings and sculpture, explores the history of surgery around the world. The Museum, located in the heart of Chicago's Gold Coast, is house in a landmark-status mansion designed by the renowned architect Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1917. It is the only building of its era in this neighborhood that is open to the public. The Museum opened its doors to the public in 1954.

One the fourth floor of the Museum is the Anatomy in the Gallery contemporary art exhibition space, consisting of two adjacent galleries. This program, which was established in July of 1998, features work of local and national artists addressing themes of anatomy, medicine, surgery, disability, health and other related issues. There are four exhibitions per year, and usually two artists are featured per quarter.

We currently receive two grants for the continued support of this program. One comes from the Illinois Arts Council; the other from the CityArts Grant.
